Eating less sugar will give you more energy, better health, better skin, fewer false-hunger pangs and could be the best thing you ever do to aid fat loss. And it’s nowhere near as hard as it might seem right now.

Read and re-read the following six facts and remind yourself of them every time you’re tempted. This alone will be a massive help in the first stages of cutting down and might even be all you need to get your sugar habit under control for life.

1. Sugar is not an essential food group – you don’t “need” it

You don’t need to eat refined sugar – this is the kind of sugar in your diet that comes from snack foods. It’s completely artificial it is nutritionally barren, potentially harmful to health and if you eat too much of it, you can even become addicted. You need protein, healthy fats and plenty of fiber in your diet, but not sugar.

2. Sugar is not a good source of energy

When you have an energy drink or eat a piece of candy, you will notice that it might give you a burst of energy for a little while, but it never lasts long. You will always “crash” and crave even more sugar to give you the energy you’ve lost. This cycle continues if you keep trying to fueljulia kitchen up with this poor source of fuel. Get energy from “real food” sources and you’ll be energised for longer without the nasty side-effects of sugar.

3. Sugar cravings are not real hunger

Sugar is a mischievous little trickster and can fool you into thinking you’re hungry for it. Cravings for sugar are not hunger. And they can cause you to eat more than you need to in a day. Don’t confuse cravings for sweets with hunger for quality nutrition. If you don’t feel like eating a wholesome healthy meal, you’re probably not really hungry.

4. The less sugar you eat, the less you’ll crave it

Sometimes, sugar behaves like a drug. The more you eat of it, the more you crave it. The opposite is true as well: if you eat less of it, you’ll crave it less. Beating sugar cravings is almost like convincing your body to forget it ever liked sugar in the first place. So remember that every time you say no to sugar you’re making it easier to say no again next time temptation hits.

5. Replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners will keep you craving it

Artificial sweeteners may keep things sweet without spiking your blood sugar. But they also keep you craving that fake sweetness. Not to mention all the chemicals they contain and confusing messages they send to your body. Replacing sugar with artificial sugar doesn’t solve the problem. In fact, it might even make it worse.

6. Believe it or not, after a while, sugar will lose it’s appeal 

You’re probably thinking something like “but I’ve always had a sweet tooth” or even “my days will be horrible without ever eating sugary foods”, I know it’s hard to imagine not wanting sweet foods because I’ve been there. But believe me, no matter how much you love sweet stuff, or how strong the appeal of sugar is to you now, you can get to point where you simply don’t want it. It takes time and happens gradually, but you’ll be amazed at how your tastes change and how much better you feel as result of eating less sugar. The first few days are the biggest challenge but after a few days people usually notice they’re thinking about sweet foods less and less until one day they find themselves turning down cookies, cakes or whatever it is for you simply because they don’t fancy eating them.
